Hey,
We've had the opportunity to meet with a lot of the members
this week and eat with them. They're
opening up well, and we're gaining their trust.
It’s been great meeting with them because they're close to giving us
some referrals and they've given us tons of food to take home and now our
pantry is full. One member even let us
pick out ties yesterday at his house. It
does feel a little different working with these members here and switching back
to white culture, but I love them.
Last p-day we got a tour of the Tyson meat factory. Unfortunately they didn’t show us everything
so we didn’t see the killing and skinning, but we did see a good amount of the
production line and the carcasses being cut up.
It was nasty, yet morbidly fascinating at the same time. Sometimes the town stinks because of it and
everywhere smells like dead cows. It’s
not too bad though.
We had some crazy winds in the middle of last week. I think we clocked well over 50 mph. We slightly busted one of our cars doors when
it got caught by the wind and slammed back.
One morning run Elder Vawdrey and I decided to try a new road
to run and on the way back we wanted to take a shortcut. So we ran a mile through a recently cut corn
field in the pitch darkness of morning.
We're true Nebraska missionaries now.
I called 911 for the first time in my life this week. We live in a condominium style apartment and
our neighbors love to party. Normally it’s
not too bad but this last Saturday they got out of control. We were woken up at 1:00 in the morning by
their hard rap that they had on full volume and bass. Then outside there was 4 guys, drunk as
skunks, yelling and screaming at each other, about to get in fight. We gave them some time to come down but to no
avail so I called in a public disturbance and the cops showed up. I can’t wait to have my own house someday and
be done with this apartment nonsense.
We had a little miracle this week. Elder Vawdrey called a number from our phone
looking for a certain family in a nearby city.
Instead he talked with one of the same name here in Lexington. He was a former investigator and didn’t sound
too interested. He said we could talk if
we ever ran into him at his aunt’s house who is a member. Well we went over one night and ran into
him. Apparently he had almost been
baptized into an evangelist church this last weekend but they had wanted more
baptisms at once so they canceled his.
He had some questions that related right to the restoration so we left
him with a chapter in the Book of Mormon to read and pray about. We were led at the exact moment of need for
this man by "complete accident".
W, a recent convert, lost his mother-in-law this last
week. She had been sick for a while back
in Liberia and finally pasted away. W
took it pretty hard. She provided the
housing and means so that he could graduate from high school back in Africa and
then be eligible for the diversity visa to immigrate to the US. We shared with
him a message about the plan of salvation and he was comforted by that. Then he came to church this week and had a
great time feeling the spirit comfort him.
I can’t think of much else to include for this week.
Love y'all
E' Harker
